Does anyone know where I can apply for a government home improvement Grant?

My husband and I are in desperate need of a new roof. We own our home and were going to get it replaced only due to the economy our bank is no longer giving home improvement loans. Does anyone know where I can apply for a grant? Every place I have tried to fill out an application wants your credit card number which makes me leary. If anyone can help with any info I'd be glad to check it out!

1. You're right to be leery. There's no such thing as a government grant given to private citizens to make home improvements. The people who claim you can get such grants are just scammers.
2. They don't exist at the federal level. You were right to be leary of those "grant" websites. They are scams. Check if your state has some sort of housing finance agency. They probably won't do a grant but they may do a loan. Unfortunately, with the bad economy, these types of programs are some of the first to get cut.
3. There is no such grant unless you were hit by a natural disaster. Taxpayers money is not used for home improvements. You need to cut spending and save just like everyone else who needs a new roof.
4. No such thing exists. Or technically more correct: (1) Some special loan programs exist for people who own homes in particular areas (You would find these through your local governments development organizations and the select lenders. They do NOT apply to most people) (2) Programs exist to repair damage in specific areas as the result of specific situations. Usually as the result of state & federal disaster relief. Again, you find the sources through your local government. Again, rare. Odds are if you qualify everybody in your neighborhood knows about it. (3) Everything else is a lie or a scam.
