What resources are online for building eco homes?

How can I build an eco house? What books, websites or other resources do you know about? Any advice would be helpful.

  1. When you build "eco" you need to think of short and long term costs/problems. There are many good ideas out there but many haven't passed the test of time. Building something that seems "eco" but could end up requiring allot of maintenance may not be very "eco" at all. Good option is buy an existing home, re-use, and go from there. Manufactured homes and Modular homes can be a safe bet and usually more eco friendly than site built. Most modular and manufactured homes are built in one place, materials are shipped in in large loads as opposed to a partially full truck here and there. The employees can live close to the plant and drive less than going to a job 30 miles away one day 70 miles the next. Usually these homes esp modular are built much better than site built homes, leading to lower fuel cost when it comes to heating and cooling. They are built in a controlled environment and there is usually less wasted materials. Anything built in an assembly line manner will be more e efficient than build it here and there. You can google and find out allot of info but be careful, what seems good on the net or HGTV doesn't always translate to good when it comes to actually breaking ground. Another issue is; anything to far out of the norm maybe hard to get financing for.
