My Home Depot

I lost the key to my file cabinet, Can home depot make a new one?

i lost the key to my 3 door file cabinet and it was the only key that I had. Can I go to home depot with the lock so that they can make another key? The file cabinet is not locked, so I can easily take the lock off and take it. I need to know ASAP. Thanks

  1. Making a key for your lock would probably cost more than replacing the lock, getting new keys in the process. You might have to hunt around, though, to get a suitable lock.
  2. As the easiest way to fix it would be to just replace the lock. It would save you time and most likely money. If you have the serial number of the cabinet, you may be able to contact the manufacturer and get a replacement key. Although I can see some legal issues arising over this. Just get another lock. Good luck.
  3. Most plunger-type filing cabinet locks have a code number on the face. A locksmith can make a key from that number. It will help if you can provide the cabinet manufacturer's name, too. Those who say a new lock is inexpensive are correct, but be sure you get an exact match. There are three sizes.
  4. To answer your question, Can Home Depot make you a new key? The answer is no. Their machines can only duplicate an existing key. For an original key you must consult a professional locksmith. Best guess on a price is in the 5 to 8 dollar range.
  5. Donmohan2 has the right idea. When I had one made recently from the number on the lock face it was about $15.
  6. There usully is a number on the lock itself. A lock company may be able to use that number to make a new one. You may want tto take the lock in. It removes easily.
