My Home Depot

Why is it legal to build homes and businesses so dangerously close to streets and highways?

We see it all the time. I know of a restaurant where part of the dining area sits maybe 20 feet from rt. 1 speed limit 45 or 55. How many homes have we seen mere feet from the road in sharp curves? Even a building that sets back a little from the road is at risk of a vehicle barreling thru if theres no barrier. Yet people will let their children play in front yards with traffic zipping by right at the end of the driveway. Its insane.

Public Comments

  1. they want to maximize space for their buildings..
  2. Perhaps the setback was greater when Rt. 1 was a 2 lane dirt road. When the road was widened, the state took away the setback, giving the appearance of the house being built that close to the road. The state took the property rather than condemning the house or restaurant via emiment domain. Would be nice to specify where you were talking about.
  3. It is legal because they make it legal. Duh
