Do portable homes have to meet any building codes?

Meaning buildings like converted ship storage containers, mobile homes, or even one house I saw on hgtv shaped like a space shuttle. How can unique homes meet building codes if necessary? Also what about rv's or converted school buses And dome homes? What about underground homes?

1. all types of housing must meet the basic plumbing and electric codes....i live in a high wind zone so all sturctures must meet the 130 mph wind code also....yes, all should meet the min. building codes but i'm sure not all get permits so they r never inspected....... lic. gen. contractor
