Building Green Homes Energy Efficient Knowledge Base
Where can I find information about building green? My wife and I are interested in building a home and we want to build green but we don't really know where to start. We want to have our home powered by solar power and we want to look into energy efficient building materials and such. Anyone know where we go to start?
Green Living, Environmental, Energy Efficient, and Durable Home; Info/Education for planning to build one? If you watch the "Green Planet" channel, and have seen the show "World's Greenest Homes", well then you might get the idea. I want to build an almost completely energy-efficient house, that is good, maybe even great, for the environment. Solar panels, wind turbines, and whatever else there could be that'd help. I don't mind using recycled material for construction and furniture, and I definitely don't mind if I have to have sturdy steel beams and etc. As long as it's a very durable(in fact, I was hoping for: Durable enough to withstand natural and/or man made disasters), I don't really mind style, but usually it seems the architecture of such houses ends up looking amazing anyway. If anyone knows of materials and furniture that can "really" last, that'd be nice. I was hoping someone out there had some good ideas on how to learn all about this kind of stuff. Websites, books, E-books, guides. Prices to use on whatever you may know of don't really matter since this is for my possible future. I don't need it to be too specific in all these areas, in fact, just respond to the title of this question if that's okay! Oh yeah brandon h, lol. I'll have to update my picture, my hair "is" cut.
looking for careers that i can help build green homes? I am 16 and really interested in have a green career in the future. I watch PLANET GREEN a lot , especially watch GREENOVATION. I was wondering are there any careers out there that are green. I really want to find a career that help with building green homes. When ppl build or remodel their homes, i want to be the one who tells them about green appliances and other futures that will help them with being energy efficient and tell them how much money and energy they will save and how much will their house appraisal go up, if desired to sell. Like a Eco Consultant i guess. Or i want to be the one who helps ppl change their lifestyle to a green lifestyle (like that show WASTED).Please help me find careers that are green and how i can pursue them? THANKS
Energy Efficient House Questions? Help me be green.? i'm doing a project on energy efficient homes, and i need a lot of tips. i have to build a model so i want some suggestions on what to include on it. i'm already going to have solar panels & a wind turbine, trees, double paned windows, efficient bulbs, lots of insulation... but i need more ideas, help! (also, is there a certain shape of house that is more energy efficient?) and i know windows should be on the south side of the house...does anyone have any other types of tips such as that?
green homes? I want to build a house that is energy efficient and wanted to know how I might build one that stands on its own.
Moving to a more energy efficient home. Any way to calculate the energy savings? I am an energy saving buff (all about going Green) and I am moving from an other home built in the 60s to a house that was built in 96. The new home is all electric. We were paying electric and gas at the older house. It is well insulated and we will be purchasing energy star appliances. We are only paying about $200-$250 more a month with this move and I am hoping we will off-set that will the energy savings in the more efficient house. Is there anyway I can calculate this?
What's the best way to fight global warming? Hillary would transform our economy from carbon-based to clean and energy efficient, jumpstarting research and development through a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund and doubling investment in basic energy research. She would also spur the green building industry by funding the retrofitting and modernization of 20 million low-income homes and take concrete steps to reduce electricity consumption, including enacting strict appliance efficiency standards and phasing out incandescent light bulbs. Recognizing that transportation accounts for 70 percent of U.S. oil consumption, Hillary would increase fuel efficiency standards to 55 miles per gallon by 2030, but would help automakers retool their production facilities through $20 billion in "Green Vehicle Bonds."
Ways to build a totally green home? In the future, I'm determined to build a completely environmentally friendly house, and besides these, are there any other ways to build it 'green'? Using non-toxic non-VOC paints and finishes Using sustainable harvested, FSC certified hardwood, or bamboo Using recycled materials, like recycled plastic bottle carpeting Using non-VOC glues and adhesives Buying eco-friendly furniture and decorations, or buying furniture and decorations that will last a long time, so they don't have to be reproduced Using energy-efficient lighting Installing Energy Star rated appliances Maximizing natural lighting Using native plants, and drought resistant landscaping (zeroscaping) Planting native trees Recycling Reusing waste in order to create compost Using a recycled or eco-friendly insulation, such as denim or soy Any others that I missed?
Need name ideas for an earth friendly building program... Help!? We are working on an optional building package that consists of earth friendly/green advantages for new homes. The package will include energy efficient lighting/heating, water saving features, designs that limit waste etc. We've been thinking of a name for this program such as True Green (but we're not truly a green builder, so I think this is misleading) or some around earth friendly.... anyone have any ideas??? Thanks I'm trying to stay away from using the word "green". We are not 100% green so I think that it would be misleading to say green. We are instead trying to do things that are more earth friendly and improve in places that we can improve on. Thanks
It's AMERICA! Remember, we ALL have the right to live, and? It's AMERICA! Remember, we ALL have the right to live, and that includes the four walls and roof we call home, how WE want to live. Our CONSTITUTION allows US to make the decisions. Not your neighbors, not 60 minutes, not some liberal or conservative, not some mosque, and most deffenitaly not congress. None of you have a right to criticize these people for spending THEIR money how they want. Look at how many jobs were created just to build and maintain that 10,000 sq. ft. thing. And when it comes to energy effeciency, most are already more energy efficient per sq. ft. than homes built in the last 20 years. That's if the home owner decides NOT to add any extra green building products or internal systems. I'd be willing to bet that some are even more energy efficient than the average 1960's 2,000 sq. ft. ranch. What you think?
Wouldn't the country go green in time if left up to the free market if only green products were available? as replacements? Part of cap and trade is a stipulation that the building code in CA be met before a home can be sold. If you need to replace the toilet, you can only buy toilets that save water. If you need to replace your washing machine and all you could buy were energy efficient washing machines that is what you would buy? Why do the same manufacturers offer both with the old fashioned energy guzzlers at a much lower price than the energy efficient ones? Soon the only light bulbs available will be energy efficient. Manufacturers can only stay in business if they offer what the people want. Appliances and fixtures only last 10-15 years. Couldn't homes become green with the free market rather than forcing such expenses on people who can't afford to do it all at the same time?
How much should the electric bill be? Florida home built 1997, 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, air conditioning Note: have new divided duct work into three sections-living room, right side of house, left master bedroom (all have separate thermostats set to 79, 77, 78) Front door has no weather strip large gap under door, windows in front right bedroom do not shut entirely or lock, all original windows need to be replaced (tested for air leaks) Have replaced all bulbs in home with the spiral "green" energy efficient bulbs. I am asking for a normal 4 bedroom/2 bath florida home-how much would the electric bill be? AND With the specific information listed above how much would the electric bill cost?
Should governments give tax breaks to green people? Many people, gluttonous, insecure, drive gas guzzling vehicles to feel better about themselves; having a false sense of security, heightened lack of consideration for others, many people drive faster than the posted speed limit, endangering the lives of everyone that may come near them. But what about the people that ride bicycles? People that do not own a car? I remember talking to someone and thinking what a load of bull, as they explained how they write off more mileage and other stuff, regarding their taxes. I realize I don't pay gasoline tax and vehicles maintenance fees, etc., but I also do not endanger peoples' lives, under my own hand (driving too fast in a few thousand pound weapon), nor do I beat up the road or spew pollution into the air. Why is it that I pay more in taxes? I know that many, many peoples' lives will be changing, when we get past the self absorbed things we do, such as some owning several vehicles, because they simply can afford to and they must not look vulnerable to their peers, due to insecurities and such. It is terrible, at times, I see someone driving their oversized Hummer and because they're not so able to maneuver the vehicle, along with the desire to show other people up, they park in no parking zones or even in the middle of the designated 'driving' area of a parking lot, rather than in an actual parking spot. I noticed some are short, and they're not the best drivers, rather than pull into a spot they just drive right up and park. Well, I guess we can't penalize people for being stupid, but how about people that make a conscious effort to conserve and not waste. I keep my heat on 50 most of the time, with a space heater in my room, or I literally bounce off the walls to up my body temperatue. I went thru less than 200 gallons of fuel oil in the past year, mainly because I'm bound to an apartment, as opposed to having the financial ability to afford anything more. As well, my father built his home in 1981 and to this day it is one of the most efficient homes I've seen. Probably THE most efficient. In two years they burned 190 gallons of fuel oil and about 2.5 coords of wood. Granted, wood may not be the best option, however, the alternative is being bound to making someone rich, buying their product, heating oil. People often skimp on quality, due in part to a lack of concern for whoever may live in the home because it saves them money. Rather than building the best, most efficients homes, contractors will slap up pre-fabricated houses which, if built right, would save the homeowners plenty of money and would be more efficient in regards to conserving energy. Getting tax breaks for using less fuel, polluting less, endangering fewer lives, etc., in my opinion, gives me plenty of incentive to ride my bike and take shorter showers, etc. After a while, people get used to things and we could all be taking fewer / shorter showers, which could have a serious impact on future times, ie. global warming, economic recession. What do you think? No trolls, please. Thanks in advance. Let's all have an open mind about the real future of our childrens' home.
Did you hear that the White House is going to Solar Power? Solar Panels are being installed in the White House to provide some of the power needs. I think this is great, and I hope they put the entire building on Solar Power, because that will help Americans overcome their fear of switching to a new technology. The Government is already giving tax credits to individuals who switch to Solar Power or some other type of Green Technology to power their homes or businesses. If we get an Energy Bill passed, then there will be more investments in this area, and people will continue to get tax credits for making their homes and business more energy efficient.
300 pages just slipped in at last minute on Cap and Trade, ALL homeowners will faint when they here this!!!? OMG, 300 pages just slipped into cap and trade (voting on it soon) Every house must be at Green standards before you sell it. even democrats will crap about this one! if you are poor and want to sell your home you will have to spend thousands before you can sell it!!!!!!! OMG, CALL YOUR SENATOR RIGHT NOW! It gives the federal government branch of energy power to set any law they want!!!! (.. has the power to change the consumer's habbits anyway they need...) IT IS NOT FALSE, IM TYPING THIS AS I AM READING IT MYSELF AND WATCHING IT LIVE ON C-SPAN... IT WAS JUST ADDED A FEW HOURS AGO! EVERY HOUSE MUST HAVE AN OUTLET THAT WILL CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR. I'm typing as they say it on c-span... fannie and fredie will get a credit for every energy efficient house they loan out....NOT YOU! AT THE last minute tons of credits to fannie and freddie all new construction: tells you want building materials you can use. the fed. govt. holds the power to decide what is green. shifts massive amounts of power to the federal Govt. to decide how you can build your house. all apprasers are to be re trained to appraise your house on green standards with will effect the price of house. FYI: Nancy Pelosi is the one that did this. Giving full power to federal Govt and taking power to states.
How much are new construction eco-friendly houses? My husband and I are looking to purchase a home in about five years or so. Next year we'll both be working full-time, as he is finished his graduate classes, and earning almost $100k per year. We live in the D.C. area and we are thinking about doing a new construction home that is eco-friendly if it is affordable. Otherwise, we'll just buy an older home and update it as much as possible within our budget. We're trying to figure out how much we should start saving next year in order to purchase such a house. We can't find any price estimates online for green-home builders like SEED, etc. Right now, we are just breaking even as this is a really expensive area to live in (and we're not even downtown). Does anyone know what we could expect a house to cost? We'd obviously be getting a mortgage, but we want to know how much we'd need to save up for down payment to be able to afford the mortgage. This is the kind of house we're looking at: New construction 1500-2500 sq. feet Solar paneling Built with recycled/reclaimed materials & lumber Solar water heating Rain Water Collection Energy Efficient Design & Appliances Anyone? I know that new home construction in the outer reaches of the D.C. area can be around $400-800 depending how close you are to D.C. I was wondering whether the eco-friendly made it more expensive or actually about the same price?
Geography project: a futuristic redevelopment of a neighbourhood with an environmental focus? It's supposed to be like Masdar City. The neighborhood is roughly 2.1 km x 2.2 km. I have to develop a 'vision' for each area of focus: 1. Residential and Commercial (design a physical layout of the neighbourhood's homes and businesses to be self-sufficient-so, like, build grocery stores close to homes) 2. Transportation and Communication (design the networks that will carry people and information in an efficient manner) 3. Energy Use and Waste Management (design the neighbourhood's inputs and outputs to be renewable and non-pollutive) 4. Sustainability (design natural resource management strategies that ensure conservation and the 3 R's) 5. Tourism and Recreation (design cultural attractions and opportunities for tourists to engage in eco-tourism. Offer specific case studies of existing Green urban planning that have put similar environmentally focused strategies into action i.e. carpool lanes, green bins, etc) I mostly need help with 2. Transportation and Communication (just the communication part. How do you make communication environmentally friendly..?) and 5. Tourism and Recreation (I don't really understand eco-tourism). Best answer definitely goes to anyone who offers the most help. I need help with it ALL (I have no idea how to go about doing this project), but mostly 2 and 5. I apologize if this is in the wrong section, but I think it has more to do with conservation than homework help... Also, I need help with natural resource management (wasn't part of my question, but it's in my project). The only natural resource I can think of right now is water (what others are there?): How could I reduce water use other than promoting it? Is there something I could physically do? Like, create whole new water system? What would the water system be like? Thanks in advance...
Forget Kyoto We curb emissions better, so why imitate Europe? Forget Kyoto We curb emissions better, so why imitate Europe? By David Freddoso Sen. John Kerry (D., Mass.) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R., Ga.) — one a washed-up former presidential candidate, the other a rehabilitated potential future candidate — engaged in the sort of rough-and-tumble, no-rules debate that Gingrich has always talked about with relish. It was a high-brow argument about global warming, lasting 90 minutes and with no restrictions, between two intelligent politicians — the kind of serious debate that few of our modern presidential candidates could survive. The debate was remarkable in several ways, not the least of which was its confirmation of Kerry’s attempt, with a new book and a series of appearances, to piggy-back off of Al Gore’s environmentalist movie-star success. But that is not all that the senator from Massachusetts is borrowing from Gore. Like his newly admired predecessor, the 2004 presidential wannabe has affected that air of national scolding that marked Gore’s presentation before two congressional panels last month. As with Gore, this involved the inevitable comparison of America to Europe on their respective environmental records. Americans, Kerry asserted, should feel ashamed for being such a dirty, nasty lot when it comes to carbon emissions. “The Europeans are taking this more seriously,” Kerry said of their quest to reduce carbon emissions, and thus (they hope) diminish global warming. “They’re struggling to meet the Kyoto standards and we’re not. We’re living outrageously, as an outlaw, outside of it. We’re not trying.” The message is that the United States is the Big Bad Wolf of global warming. In particular, we don’t take the environment seriously because we did not sign the Kyoto Treaty. Greener than Europe? Then again, Kerry might want to read up on those environmental records before he starts shaming us all. As guilty as we like to feel in this country, we can hold our head up when it comes to greenhouse-gas pollution. It isn’t just that Europe is failing to meet its Kyoto obligations, having increased emissions since 1993. It’s much better than that. The fact is that, in the years after we elected George W. Bush — a man who would presumably knock his own grandmother into a vat of toxic sludge if it allowed him to contaminate another pristine wilderness area — we have soundly beaten the European Union in curbing emissions growth. This despite our having much more population growth and a much stronger economy. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that U.S. carbon-equivalent emissions rose by 1.3 percent between 2000 and 2004. During the same period, the U.S. population grew by 4 percent, and our economy grew by 19.5 percent. In the 25 European nations reporting under the Kyoto Protocol, carbon equivalent emissions rose by 2.2 percent during the same period (and by 2.4 percent in the 15 Western European nations). The EU-25 population, meanwhile, grew by 1.6 percent and their collective economy grew by just under 7 percent. Between 2000 and 2004, America had more than twice the population and economic growth of Europe and a little more than half of Europe’s growth in carbon emissions. That’s not so bad, is it? Should we really be looking up to Europe? One would hope that environmental consciousness is not about signing treaties or setting bold goals, but rather about decreasing emissions. That is where we beat everyone. It is true that America still emits more carbon and its equivalents than any other nation on earth — about 25 percent of the world’s emissions. But this is not the best measurement of how we are doing. As Christopher Horner points out in his book A Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism, our citizens are not just lifeless receptacles that consume and then pollute. Rather, we produce things that lead to human flourishing and prosperity, and in America, we happen to produce a lot more of this than anyone else. With 5 percent of the world’s population, we produce 25 percent of its wealth. Compared to Europe, we produce more jobs with higher wages, and we enjoy an economy that is 42.5 percent wealthier per person. Year after year, we leave Europe farther behind. Americans should want the rest of the world to enjoy the same prosperity we do. Unless we want a global warming action-plan that simply ignores the costs of eliminating causes of carbon emissions — a plan that forces us to stop flying in airplanes, driving cars, heating and cooling our homes, and possibly even using computers — we should be factoring in that cost by measuring our greenhouse pollution against our economic production. And by this measure, America is not doing so badly. At 0.55 metric tons of carbon per thousand dollars of GDP (our “carbon intensity”) in 2004, the United States fits right in with Europe, somewhere between the Netherlands (0.63 tons) and Belgium (0.54 tons), well below Estonia (0.81 tons) but well above France (0.26), which generates much of its electricity using carbon-free nuclear power. More importantly, we have been reducing our emissions by this measure. Our carbon intensity has decreased by 7 percent since 2000 — larger than the EU-25 reduction of 4.5 percent during the same period. Between our existing regulations and individual, market-driven decisions to adopt more energy-efficient (and cleaner) technologies, we are successfully containing our carbon footprint while still enjoying prosperity. That may not be enough to save the planet from hellfire, but if the global-warming alarmists are right, then nothing will be. We are doomed anyway unless we adopt nuclear power, build hundreds of large dams, or find some other cheap and viable energy source. “You want to impose, by government coercion, a standard,” Gingrich pointed out to Kerry in the debate. He went on to argue that Kerry’s idea of a cap-and-trade system to control emissions is a loser — that an incentive-based plan offering tax credits would be less painful and get quicker results than government compulsion. He may be right, but the real question is whether either plan is necessary. Even under the Bush administration, which supposedly does nothing about pollution and wants to despoil our planet, we have managed to hold down annual emissions increases and reduce our emissions intensity better than most countries that signed Kyoto. We are seeing better results than European countries that have had to cut back electricity production and lose jobs in a futile attempt to meet the treaty’s arbitrary standards — standards that many environmentalists argue are not nearly stringent enough to make a difference anyway. The idea that the fanfare of a government initiative — a treaty or a new set of regulations or even a market-distorting tax-credit — would make us any more environmentally friendly as a nation is absurd. Put more simply, it was worth not signing Kyoto if only to save the paper.
