Are there any contractors that build underground homes in western PA? I live in western PA, and am interestedin building an underground home, but cannot find anyone local that does this. It is in zipcode 15856. Does anyone know of any underground home forums, or does anyone know any contractors in this area that have experience with underground homes? I would also be interested in hearing from people that actually live in, or have built underground homes.
Building an underground home? Where do I start? My husband and I are thinking of building an underground home on some acreage we have. I know that I could just google for plans and such but does anyone on here know some really good sites for tips on this and plans for homes? We live in northeastern Montana.
Why aren't all homes in America joined into 1 building using secret passage tunnels underground? The US government would require homeowners to leave their properties while tunnel construction is in progress. Those who refuse will be arrested. The project would enable homeless people to live between homes inside the rain-proof tunnels so they can enter people's homes freely and steal food from people's private homes when they get hungry enough. The project will be financed by the US government by taxing millionaires. The project will mandate a social responsibility on the part of homeowners nationwide to feed the homeless or the homeless will otherwise have tunnel access to your houses. Would this be a good idea?
Underground building in Florida? I've been reading up about underground and semi-underground homes and shelters/bunkers, and they're an interesting concept indeed (although the necessity/practicality of an underground fallout bunker is debatable...). However, isn't this an impossibility in Florida? I'm from the Gainesville area in North Central FL, what with the nearby springs and the water table? Is there any way to build underground and get around this?
Question about natural built homes....cob and underground? So I live in the Midwest...Ohio. And I don't really plan on moving very far but I wouldn't be completely against it. But, I've been looking into a cob home or underground home. Or any other form of really natural home. I've heard though that underground homes are expensive. So I like the Cob route b/c it's cheaper and environmentally friendly. Any companies that actually do that....consultants....? And, will a cob home be OK in the midwest? With the weather? I'm not really that educated...just starting out.
Info on Underground Homes (Houses) anyone in South Dakota? We're building an underground house and would be interested in hearing from anyone West River South Dakota to Western Wyoming to Nebraska. We've read books and my husband can do everything - anything he can't he has friends and family who can - even to an archetectual engineer! However, :) I just love modulars and there are GREAT ones for underground. Any advice, suggestions, etc OR someone experienced in these that we might be able to pay to do some/all of it, except excavation. If you have any experience here, please write back even if not close by. THANKS!! :)

Can a home built over a an underground spring be made waterproof? My grandpa lives in an older home in the country. In the basement he has a pump running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If it did not run, his basement would fill up with water. He says house is built over an underground spring. Is there any way a company could come in and stop this water from coming into basement? It comes through the floor and one wall. The furnace is in the basement and up on blocks. The water heater and electrical box is down there too.

if I'm building a "home" underground will it be structurally sound? its going to be approximately: 6 feet high 20/15 feet long and about 8 feet wide, i have no idea what I'm doing and need major help, oh and Its going to be lined with plywood if that makes a difference It's not an actual home, just to clarify, it's a playhouse (like a bomb shelter) for my two younger cousins, i was told to use triangles because they are better at holding things up but I'm still confused,,,,, and I need actual help no sarcasm please
How to build an underground tunnel??? Look, my uncle just finished building his home and now he wants to build an underground tunnel from his home to his backyard. Which is about 50 ft down the road. So, can anyone tell me what should my uncle use? Like what kind of tools or something? Also, he wants to dig it as fast as possible, so no one will know about it? He wants to make a surprise for his family, you know ? So, please help me please but only good answers! P.S. He will dig the tunnel through soil, and maybe concrete.
greensburg tornado..live underground? is it plausible for towns that live in Kansas and other states with tornados (look at Greensburg, the ENTIRE town is gone) to build underground homes? the homes would look exactly the same on the inside, walls, ceilings, 2 levels, tv, etc, but just underground so when a tornado hits, it would just pass overhead and not damage anything? we went to the moon, i dont see why this couldnt be done. seems better than having to rebuild your home every 5 years.
how come u never see underground parking garages for homes? the only times i have ever seen underground parking is for apartments or shopping plazas. what is the reason for this? is it impractical? if so, why? i see nice houses that have like 2-3 car garges and driveways but i would think if it were underground, than you could have build like that much of a bigger house or yard.
Has anyone built an underground house? I am considering building an underground off the grid home in Northern Nevada. I have the floor plan, plumbing, and electrics worked out on paper. I would appreciate any advice to foundation, walls and roof. Thanks.
How much would it cost to build this underground? how much would it cost to have a complete 2 or 3 story underground home? complete with a fake back and front yard, fake sky dome over you. just a all out bad ass underground get away from the world? not that i have the money, just for sh!ts and giggles
Are circular homes safer then the average home? I'm not really into architecture but the more I think about circular homes, the more I like the idea. I just assume that it would be safer since it's more aerodynamic, so wind damage wouldn't be that big of a problem. It would also be safer if your building underground because I'd think the pressure would just keep it together instead of imploding even during an earthquake. Is there really something to the Cottage shape? Any other benefits?
Would you have a underground bunker built under your home? Sure it sounds like somehting out of a sci fi movie but. Would you? No need to go outside. All you need is right there even means of producing and collecting your own power and electricity. Your own means of growing plants and fruits and even live stock all in sub levels and also all the comforts of a modern home with the internet and back up files of movies and news and all that. Would you have something like that secretly built under your home? And how much would you pay?

Does anyone live in an underground home? Any info on building or building cost and what type of structure you are living in. I have looked at a couple of sites on the subject but I need to get some real life experience input. If you have encountered any issues with living underground I would like to hear those as well.
Monolithic Dome vs Underground? I'm researching quite a bit of things to learn what I can about building and energy efficient and cost effective home. Though i wont build this house for atlease 4 years I would like to know what i can now. Right now I'm debating between a Monolithic Dome or a completely Underground home. This is were I cant quite decide. From what I understand, monolithic domes are constructed with polyurethane insulation. Needless to say, alot of an underground home's insulation comes from the the earth surrounding it. Both are extremely good insulators, but which insulation is better? Another thing hendering my decision is the issue of condesation in underground homes. Since underground homes are usually warmer than the earth surrounding them, the walls may condensate just enough for mold and mildew to grow. What is the best way to circumvent this problem? Is there a way to keep condesation out or prevent condensation all together? (With out being "cheap" what is a cost effective way of doin so. Also keep in mind the longevity of the method) The final obstical I for see is various housing regulations. (First of all why does the government get to decide the style and way i build my house? I used to think this was a free country. If i want to design my house in such a way I risk burning to death that should be my business. but any way) Do these regulations (particularly window regulations) apply in the same manor for underground houses? The problem here is if I build a completely underground house (like i want to) the only windows will be on the roof of each room. Since it is completely underground, there is no way I could put useful windows on the side of the house. Is there a way around these window regulations WITHOUT comprimising my concept of a secluded underground house? As you can see I prefer the idea of my house being underground slightly more than above mostly because of seclusion, privacy, and security. Since I do also like the monolithic dome concept, it will be incorperated in the underground home. I just need to know is the underground home I dream for legal? On more thing. Are these regulations actually Laws or merely common standards? What is the punishment for violating them?
How would underground sunoco gasoline pipeline through your home front yard affect you? I am buying a new construction home. There is a sunoco gas pipeline of some sort passing through the front yard underground. My question is : is it safe? are there any underground chances of explosion or fire of some sort? My thinking is if there would have been any risk then city would not have given permission to built the home. Any help would be appreciated. Also is there any chance of chemical poisoning if the pipeline bursts?
Why do people build in Tornado Alley? Why do people build home in an area known to be weather that will rip their homes apart? It seems like a great place for underground homes and windmill farms though - energy crisis complete.
Why will aliens visit the Earth? Grey aliens, reptoids, draco, nordic aliens etc why? thats better question Humans have already sucked all the resources out of this planet already so what would they want from here? Some people say grey aliens need our dna to add to their own, because male grey aliens have no sex organs and they are taking human female eggs, sperm so they can exist. Why dont we make first contact with these aliens instead of them stealing the insides of our cows, eating cats other animals I have heard reports and done my own research: Found aliens are running around earth abducting humans with no clothes, they cant speak at all its all telepathic speaking While reptoids are know to be running around earth will no clothes and even building underground homes in the united states, kidnapping humans for consumption or eat dogs, cats other animals to eat also why do they want earth if they are real? us earthlings have already taken all the resources on earth even destroyed oceans, ponds, lets not forget the oil sands and have dug earth for 75% of its resources already we have taken alot of our resources why? would aliens be interested in our planet, why would aliens want to take our dna is another question? because earth has homosexuals living here gays, lesbians,bi sexuals, I dont think the aliens want to have a planet like that maybe they im sexist or discriminate of anyone but why they like our planet maybe they want japans new way of changing fecal matter to steak or they could be watching soylent green and farming the whole earth you never know or maybe they want to steal all of earths weed, crack, hill billy codien oxy, meth etc if they are real why dont we give them all the homosexuals then its are good! im not sexiest or Discriminate im just trying to help the planet earth or we can give the aliens all the Terrorists out there the aliens would be happy and leave earth Sources:Project Bluebook Other classified papers:
homes without electric bills or water bills? saw a clip on the weather channel about these types of homes. pictures shows that they are built underground, which i have seen around the country. Can anyone tell me more about this and how it all works.? yes these homes are in the ground for the most part but the roofs stick out and the door of course . these are both good answers and i am not sure which one to chose.
What do you think of the novel idea to build cities underground if it could be made a pleasant place to live? the advantages are numerous; security(no windows to break into), efficiency(much easier to maintain a constant temperature), quieter(no outside noise). Modern technology can make it comfortable even for claustrophobics. I saw a TV ad where a guy got off his couch directly to a treadmill that had projector screens on both sides with an outside view moving by as fast as he was running. Making walls(and ceilings) project anything you want(even windows with a view of your choice), in awesome HD quality (important note:viewable from any angle like a TV does) is already technically feasible. Pumping outside air and sunlight inside is easy. Securing your home is as easy as locking the front door and garage door. Your yard will be directly above you. Businesses too, like Warehouses, some factories, offices, can be made totally underground too.
Why are powerlines underground in new developments? Theres a new neighborhood being built next to my old neighborhood and after watching the homes come up i never saw powerlines, they were put underground. I've never seen this before, why is this done? Is it safer or something?
Why do humans still live above ground level? There are several advantages, such as quietness, security and permanence in building below ground. Why is it still so rare? Why don't Tornado alley farmers have lovely underground homes? Isn't pride the real reason, today? .
Ideas for building a fallout shelter? I am seriously considering building a fallout shelter below ground out from my home. Even though I live in florida, I am on a bluff (small hill) and have done test digging and have not hit the water line until about 10 feet deep! I am considering using concrete blocks, then filling them with concrete. I plan to make the inside dimensions 8 ft. wide, 10 ft. deep and 6 ft. high I will build a staircase down towards its door and have a cellar door over the stair well as well. I also plan on putting 2 feet of dirt on top of the 1ft. thick block ceiling (filled iwth cement) I would like to be able to have another underground area that is built much thinner for food and wate rstorage, because keeping the dust particles out of food and wate ris all that matters, not the fact that the gamma rays can go through it. Anyway any idea on how much concrete blocks and concrete will cost not to mention getting a back ho to dig that hole? Thanks!
Why has everything been deleted in my world on Total Miner: Forge??!!? I made a (fairly) big underground home, a building in the side of a hill, and a big Creeper statue outside. I load up my world and I'm underground and I dunno where I am. I hit escape and everything has been completely wrecked! I've got it back now. but I still wanna know what happened. thanks people who answer
what is the cost to build a house underground? I really want to build a house underground (sorta like a hobbits house :D), but I would like to know what is the estimated cost to build an approximately 2000 sq ft home underground? As well if you know what are the pros and cons to have a house below the ground? John: I want to build a house below ground because it's a very green home to have. The materials excavated in construction can be used in the building process. They have less surface area so fewer building materials are used, and maintenance costs are lower. They are also wind, fire and earthquake resistant. The earth's subsurface temperature remains stable, so underground dwellings benefit from geothermal mass and heat exchange, staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This saves around 80% in energy costs. By incorporating solar design this energy bill can be reduced to zero. An additional benefit of the surrounding earth is noise insulation. They blend in with the natural landscape, and have minimum impact on the local ecology. Making them aesthetically pleasing and ensures that the maximum habitat is left alone for wildlife. I don't know about city rules, I guess it'll depend where you build it and if it's in the city boundaries or not.
1960's secret underground home in Las Vegas possibly owned by Sinatra? Okay, here goes an obscure one... I can remember seeing a television special in the late 90's that visited a never publicly seen underground home just outside Las Vegas. In a huge concrete room outfitted with astroturf, fake trees, wall and ceiling murals to give the appearance of outdoors, there was a groovy sprawling 60's bungalow built with all the amenities. There was even a pool if memory serves me. I believe it was owned by Sinatra, or maybe joint ownership by the Rat Pack. I cannot find any info on the net.... am I mad, did I dream this? Does anyone know of any details or a site(s) that refers to this? Even confirmation that you have seen the same show would be of help. Thanks.

My thoughts of the world and how it operates and what can be done to better the lives of billions of people? sell all the mansions that rich people have. make them live in apartments so they can give money back to the world and sell all their bling bling. i think some rappers have like 1 million dollars on one little finger that could be used to build homes for a few people. Bill Gates has like 55 billion? wtf do you do with all that money? the world should have a set limit on home much money you should be able to have based on the size of your family. all exceeded family salary allowances should be put into a fund that goes towards research for medical advances to stop the illnesses that kill millions of people, space exploration to find possible other unknown sources of energy in the universe. developing better trade routes for food, supplies, and other items some countries cannot produce. start building cities in the sky to help the overpopulated countries to have the opportunity co-exist with developed nations to better their education and quality of life. With the education comes more advanced technology that will revolutionize the world and make surving the next couple of centuries possible. with the technology comes ways to cut down on pollution, crime, deaths, healthcare, the list goes on. the countries that are developed and have resources needed to diminish the military and have the millions have men and women fighting each other from countries around the world turned into one force that will work together to find ways to aid those who are in need. the force could be used to for a number of things including building new cities, farms, non-hazordous energy plants that transform air and water into massive energy banks that can be stored underground below cities or in a elevated storage facility that is hovering over a city to be used as a power source for large scale cities. i could go on, but the world isn't ready for this kind of large scale change, it is to busy fighting wars over land, power, natural resources, and who has a bigger budget. i can only hope that one day we can live together in peace and work together to improve our lives and our neighbooring peoples lives.

Underground copper piping has green spots, only 2 years old? Our home, that we had built 2 years ago, had a leak under the slab. Once the plumber opened the floor he found a leak and the copper pipe had green spots all over it. What could these spots be caused by and should we worry about future leaks? I am also being told that my whole house should be re-plumbed because the soil is corroding the pipe, yet no other houses in my neighborhood have this problem.
What is the best way to properly abandon my residential underground storage tank (UST)? We are buying a home with a heating oil UST of questionable history. We know that the home has not been heated with oil since 1999, when former owners installed central air. Efforts to find or get in touch with those owners to find out what was done have been fruitless. The town building official told me to make sure it was pumped dry, fill it with sand, cut off the fill pipe below ground so that it will never be seen again. I don't have the means to pump oil, don't know how to get hundreds (or thousands?) of gallons of sand, and don't even know if cutting the top off an oil pipe with a reciprocating saw is safe (sparks?). Give a man some practical answers please. And don't tell me to call a gov't agency or a contractor, which will result in a runaround or unecessary expense for a job I could probably do myself.
Conservatives: How many gold coins, food rations, and "survival seeds" do you own? Since Glenn Beck told you to horde all of these items for the impending apocalypse, I'm just wondering how much you've accumulated. Do you have seeds for your "crisis garden"? Also, did you build an underground concrete bunker beneath your home? How scared are you? Is it true that the less scared you are, the less patriotic you are?
Building alternate housing. Crates? I have known about them for a while, but, I now have a job, and I am just toying with the idea of buying land and building my own home. Just playing around with the idea, I have heard of people buying used shipping crates for considerably small amounts of money, and then turning them into homes. I just searched for more information on shipping crate homes, and all I really found were a few pictures, and some basic information on shipping crates, shipping company's, and interesting, but not-so-helpful information. I want to know what to DO with a crate once I bought one. How do you anchor it safety to the ground? How do you add siding and a roof, to make it blend in with other "normal" wood frame homes. (If thats what I wanted to do). What about plumbing and electrical? Abstract shapes? Like a rounded tower, instead of the square boxes???? How well does the steel do underground?? (An interesting basement if we buried them). Stuff like this I want to know much more about. Can they be made to look like normal homes from the inside? Instead of looking like the interior of the death-star? Basically, I am very interested in this idea that, perhaps it is possible to buy several cheap metal frames, and still come out with a cool lookin home. If anyone has more information on actual DIY construction guides for this type of thing, I would be very thankful if you would share that information with me. Thank you for your time :-)

I have a 3 part question regarding building a home on a hill - In regards to basement and driveway..? Hi. I am currently looking to build a new home and through family have acquired a nice piece of property that was given to me so I figure why not go ahead and get the most out of it. We figure that by getting the property free we can use all the money towards the actual house so we should get a lot of house for our money. Anyway on to the main concerns/questions. the property is located on a hill. Sort of in the middle as it is pretty much equal in distance from the top and bottom of the hill. Anyway my first question is can you have an underground basement that will be 100% guaranteed to stay dry and not allow water in.. I have been told by some people (not contractors) that no matter what I am told I will never have a dry basement if I live on a hill. My second question is if I build on a hill can I have a downward sloped driveway? I know/am planning on building a 2 story home and I have seen some that are placed on top of a garage and the building looks out of place. So my goal was to have the driveway slop down so basically the garage would be almost completely underground. My last and finaly question is also in regards to the garage/basement. I always wanted a 3 or 4 car garage with lots of room however with only a 35 foot wide lot its not that easy to achieve without making the house look like 1 big garage. I was wondering if, safely, you could have 1 garage door opening however once you pull in if you can make the entire bottom of the house a garage. I don't know much about construction but didn't know if you could make a nice "parking lot" or if it will be structurely unsafe. I know they have to put supports in but could they just put beams or columns in the middle area that way you can fit about 3 or 4 cars? I did not want to do a tandem style with 3 or more cars but rather possibly make it where you pull in through the 1 garage door and have like 2 lanes where you can fit 2 cars stacked in each. i know its a long question with many details but appreciate all the feedback.. Thanks
Advice for getting a construction loan for an underground house? Anybody know of any financial institutions that don't have a problem with financing a fully earth sheltered home? Our bank says we have more than enough assets for collateral for a construction loan, but they're concerned our income is not enough to make the payments until we sell our present home and property, even though we have enough in savings which could be used for this purpose for about two years, if necessary. Their concern is the unconventional construction-- if we were to default, they would have a difficult time reselling it, whereas they would have no problem if it were conventional construction. Never mind that it's more durable than a stick-built house, will have drastically lower heating bills, the technology is there to keep it both light and dry-- the bank looks at it as if we're talking about living in a cave. So does anyone know of any financial institutions that are okay with underground housing? PS-- we're in Wisconsin, but will go out of state, if we must. Mary B and valstpatrick, there are several earth-sheltered and underground homes in this area, they're hardly unique. Unusual, but with fuel prices going nuts, the idea of only having to pay an estimated $70 a YEAR for heat (in Wisconsin, no less) makes it very attractive for resale. If we were able to sell our house and extra property right now, our mortgage would be about $20K. Not exactly a huge risk. But that's the kind of thinking we're getting. RealtorV has it right-- there are bankers out there that will do it, I just need to contact them.
What are the CHANCES of having him back in my LIFE? Here's the story.. I am 22 years old. I have dated many differant guys in many types of situations from friends with benefits, friends to dating, dating to friends, online dating, and I have also crushed on guys and got over it after a little bit when i realized they didn't like me--but this time is differant.. I met this guy 9 months ago and I knew there was something about him i absolutely loved--not looks--something about his personality his spirit whatever--we talked once after that meeting but i never talked to him again because a the time my heart was NOT open to anyone. We ended up getting together 6 months later--dating or whatever--and then a physical connection sparked up on top of the other connection i felt with him--we fooled around that night--bad i know--i should made him wait--but i couldnt help myself. A week later i hear from his brother that he really likes me but is NOT open to a relationship and he actually told me this himself as well. SO i put on a front and acted like i didnt care that he didnt want more know. Then it started bothering me that he didnt call--bothering me that he was dating other people-and bothering me that we couldnt spend more time together. I managed to pull off a 2nd date with him--and more of the same feelings i had--I never discussed my feelings of jealosy or anything--i was just enjoying our time because it was our 2nd time together. but when he left i got so sad that id never see him again--and then i had heard that he got back with his EX of 5 yrs--they had and on/ off unstable relationship--they were defninitly back on and i was def. PISSED. SO, i went OFF on him and -he said i was acting like his GF and I don't just do this to anyone--i hated that i sounded that desperate and needy but i knew i had to lay out everything on the table--then he said we needed to not talk for while like he was trying to find a way to let me down EASY-- i just hung up on him and told him he was crazy for letting go of something we could of had together-- So my healing began--i tried not to think of him but EVERYTHING reminded me of him--and i kept thinking that we are gonna end up back together at a differant place in our life-- and i ve been to a psychic been on great dates with others but there he stays in my little head. VERY RECENTLY, i talked to a mutual friend then one that hooked me and him up--and out of nowhere she mentions to me that they were hanging out and he had brought up the most random OBSCURE thing him and i had in common that he had mentioned--that we both wanted to build and underground home in a backcave---i mean we had planned out everything when we talked about this from the floors the pool with the see thru bottom everything--lol..kinda makes me giggle talkin about it--but she told me it was the weirdest thing shes ever heard--but all i could do was laugh at her and tell her how weird it was that wanted so hard for me not to be around or to have me in his life and he mentions something like this and reminds me that he does stil think of me and that MAYBE he will come back to me--it gives me HOPE--- so AS weird and complicated as this all seems i still feel like we were meant to be and that he just hasnt faced it yet--SOOO COULD I be right?? WIll he be back in my life in spite of the circumstances?? WE NEVER had SEX--we just Fooled AROUND--so he didnt get what he wanted and he DIDNT want that--not yet. ANd im a VIRGIN I dont just have SEX with everyone--But i dont mind getting physical with someone I feel that connection with---so i did...BUt thats not even the half of it--so any other answers..
What is the most sensible way to prep the base of the outside of my house to avoid leaks and moisture inside? Just bought a split-level house (fully finished basement that is 1/2 underground) built in the late 1950's and it's great--very well maintained. What I noticed, however, is that all around the base of the outside (brick) walls, the old owners placed a layer of rocks, sand, brick pieces, cement chunks, etc. piled against it. Our home inspector said that they were attempting to "raise the grade" of the area outside the house, to avoid potential leaks and moisture, and just chose a really cheap and unattractive way to do so. My question is what is the proper way to do this? Is it to place more dirt/earth around the home to literally raise the grade of the lawn around it? Or can/should it be done with concrete or some other material? How? (The inspector says that there is no evidence of a prior leak or history of leaking. The owners obviously worked hard, though, to prevent one from happening, which may be a hint that we should be vigilant to the problem as well.) Thanks!
Design your home game or program? are there any good web sites or games that let you create your own home and the home you create can have as many floors as you want and as big as you want and maybe lets you build underground like a basement or something
Don't know what to use to get mildew/mold odor out of home (built in 1940's).? I have a 2 story home I use for my business. It was built around 1940's It is in wonderful condition, plaster walls, original chandolier, breathtaking staircase. But can't get the mildew/mold odor out of the home. The city has a major natural stream that flows underground, nearby so our basement is often damp when there is alot of rain. We have a sup pump and the basement does not have an odor. However, the house does. I've been in the home for 10 years now and seldom smell anything. However, friends and associates say they can smell the odor the minute they step in the front door, as well as on my clothes when I meet them after work. I've tried setting cups of ammonia around but that is only a tempoary solution. Please help me with this situation as it is embarrassing when associates come in and obviously smell the odor, some even have to step outside because it irrates their allergies, although they politely refrain from any complaints.
Is it illegal to exterminate stray cats in my office building's garage? There are several stray cats that live in my office building's underground garage. I notice somebody feeds them too. They scratch up my $80k car. I am thinking about placing a notice that if anybody wants to care for them, they should take them home otherwise I will place rat poison in their food and exterminate them. Is this considered illegal to exterminate annoying wild animals?
do you like this idea? So recently Ive been thinking of an idea I heard about to solve land availability crisises, Move underground. Many ancients built there cities underground so Im sure it could be done today, Just think, twice as much real estate! Land above ground and the land under it. True there would be little to no sunlight but humans can adapt. We can adapt to almost anything, I think living in homes built beneath the earth could work, it could be interesting, and not just homes, shops, malls, underground movie theatres. It would be cooler in the summer than living above ground. I really think people should consider this, what do you think?
Does anyone live partially or entirely off grid? Off Grid power options? If so, what type of alternate power system(s) are you using? Solar? ---(I think very expensive and in this part of the country, not enough sun.) Hydro-electric? ---(may be a viable choice if I have enough current running through my stream and or enough head from a waterfall) Wind? --- (If It is installed high enough and does not obscure.) Diesel Generator---(may be ok if underground, low speed, water cooled) We are planning to build a log home in up-state Pa. as a second home for now, but our primary residence in a few years. Thanks in advance for your answers! Newt
raise the roof or add on @ same level? we purchased our home 4 years ago - it is a 2br 1bath - 1100 sq ft ranch - (eat in kitchen/living room) - we have a 2 car garage beneath the home w/ the basement occupying the other half of our underground space. we have .6 acre of land w/ septic/well setup. we have brick exterior which is in great condition - my question is - should we add up or out. looking for aesthetics here mainly - anybody know how easy it is to match brick (if we went out) - the home was built in the 60's, and the brick is a bit longer than what I was used to seeing. We want at least one more bedroom and at least a half bath. My concerns with adding up are losing the amount of storage we have (walk-up attic, standing room only in center), but I think it would be more pleasing aesthetically to add up if we had to use a different material other than brick. Using a different material on the same level doesn't work in my mind. Anybody have experience/suggestions with this? We have considered adding a detached garage - but seeing as how we don't use our garage to park in, it's just a junk/project area, adding a detached garage really won't solve any issues as far as adding additional living space. It is definitely a great idea if we were to get rid of all of our junk :) but, again, aesthetically, to me a basement/garage area doesn't really feel like living space - it just feels like a finished basement (think lack of lighting/windows, etc.) Having said that, I'm sure if done correctly, this is a very viable option for certain homes/families - just not something I want to do bc of the aesthetic I mentioned and also all of our junk :)
How much does it cost (ballpark) to build a guest house in North Florida if I already have the land? There is some land nearby I'm thinking of buying. They say when you build, you can have one home and one mother-in-law/guest cottage connected to the main house by a covered walkway. But, I cannot afford to build a house right now -- and I can't afford to invest in something I cannot live in. Yet I really want to do this if I can think of a way. I was thinking maybe I could save money by building the mother-in-law suite, living in that for a few years (2 people - no kids), and THEN building the house when I had the money! Or, selling the property with just the guest cottage on site (if I move). If I buy the land (in subdivision/underground utilities, city water, paved roads, etc.), I want to know: 1) Would it really save me money to go this route and have the guest cottage built and not the main house? 2) Could such a cottage be built decently (pref brick/wood floors/ 1 bedroom/ 1.5 bath w. loft & deck) for less than $100K? I live in North Florida. Thanks :-)
Buying a home with abandoned underground oil tank...pitfalls? We are in the inspection stage of buying a house, which was built in 1957. During the inspection, we discovered that the house, which has gas heat, has an abandoned underground oil tank. We called the sellers, who have owed the house for about 15 years. It was already converted to gas when they bought it. They thought the oil tank was abandoned about 20 years ago. We are having the soil testing done to see if there was any leakage. If a leakage is found, it's my understanding that the seller must fix it (and that there is a fund to help them do that). If they go ahead and remove the tank and everything is properly cleaned up, would there be anything about the situation that could still adversely affect the property value? Also - what if the tank is still there, but no leakage is found? Do they still have to remove the tank? I wouldn't want to have to go through this whole process again down the road when we sell. Any other general comments/concerns/suggestions about buying a home with an abandoned underground oil tank are welcome as well.
safety during a tornado? I am a california guy all the way but my kids live in texas. I would like to move to texas but frankly I don't want to live like a mole living underground every time I see a thunderstorm, I would soil myself if I seen one of these monsters! now these things pick up and throw a car like a toy and they even rip up streets. I've read that if you are outside go to a ditch, wouldn't this just pull you out and throw you across the state? and then I read that you go to a center of the house where no windows are, but again these monsters just take a house and throws it across the state.people there including my kids are not afraid of tornados, these things seem to happen so often I'm surprized that anyone could live in such a place? my questions are, should I have a house built underground and work from home, or just go visit in the winter ?
What happens to most white male high school dropouts 20 years down the road? I don't see a lot of middle-aged white guys working in the fast food or the retail/service industry. Supposedly, these are the only avenues open to people who don't graduate from high school, but I see mostly teens and female minorities working these kind of jobs. This begs the question of what happens to the typical white guy who drops out of high school? Do the vast majority go back for a GED and enter the world of blue collar unskilled or semi-skilled labour? Or do thy just stay at home and live off of the underground economy and/or government assistance? Where do the people from this demographic group disappear to? How can they get blue-collar jobs in the building trades or working in factories without a high school diploma? Statistically, they make up over 10% of the white male population, yet I don't seem to see many white male high school dropouts struggling to make a living, as I do with women and minorities. How can 10% of the population just disappear into the cracks?
How do I build a portable dog run? I want one to be large enough for two large dogs and one large enough for two smaller dogs. All the ones I see online seem quite small. I just want it for the dogs so they can play outside and do their business while providing comfort so they can sleep in the shade or bask in the sun. I cant stick poles in the ground because I live in a model house (they never removed the concrete from under our home from when there were no homes here) and can only dig about 2 ft deep.....and trust me poles won't stay in. I want them to be portable just in case we need to move stuff around (our house is build extremely funny). We need a dog run because whoever built our house put everything that is normally in the front, in the back (like the huge phone box thing that goes underground normally placed in people's front yard). Also our retarded mailman insists on picking on our dogs then complaining.

i'm looking for the title and author of a book i read a long time ago? the main character of the book is a girl in a building that is 80 stories tall, but no one ever travels very far from home. all education in the building is done by audio/ computers, curiosity is discouraged. she has secretly been taught to read by an old lady she shared a room with, reading is unheard of and forbidden. she meets a boy who claims to be from outside the building and together they set out on an adventure to find the exit. (if i remember right it ends up being that the whole building is underground so they finally find the exit at the top) like i said it's been a long time since i read it so i don't remember very many details, but i'd like to find the name of the book, any help is greatly appriciated. thanks!

Insurance Surcharge - Has anyone successfully appealed one of these? I scratched my car while driving into the underground parking garage of my new home. I will lose my safe driver discount and my premiums will go up $850.00. It's happened to a lot of other folks in the building. It's a tight squeeze but they since no other car was involved they see me as more than 50% at fault. Has anyone ever sucessfully appealed a surcharge notice? I'm going to try and get other people's stories. Will that help?
I have a new garage with the perimeter that has wood about 24 inches above ground, is it susceptible to decay? New garage added to a 1963 home. The garage floor is cement. The outside at the base, the perimeter is wood, there is wood 4x4 down in the depth of the ground with pebble rock all around(not poured cement for walls underground) so what is visible on the outside is about 24 inches of wood then the vinyl siding. I have never seen wood on the perimeter of the garage---every I see it is cement then on top of the cement starts the brick or vinyl . Do I need to worry about wood rot or decay over the years? and have you ever heard of a garage being built like this?
How much would a bunker/fallout shelter cost someone ? Lets just say you want one to have one, an underground bunker/fallout shelter with all the goodies, generator, water tank, fuel tank, waste tank and a kitchen/sleeping area along with a food and supplies storage area, all underground and bomb/nuclear/bio-hazard proof? How much would this cost a person to have built under their house with an in house entrance or around the area of their house accessible from inside the home, like a crawl tube or whatever?
What's the correlation? I work in a large corporate building home to several thousand employees. One of the bathrooms on my floor constantly stinks of urine and/or other scatological compounds. It's a matter of the water pressure - it's too high, so when people flush, it sprays contaminated bowl water all over the floor. Another interesting fact about this bathroom is that the last stall on the right is the biggest and most consistent disseminator of Christian propaganda in the (quite large) building. Fully 90% of the time I have used that stall - over the course of nearly 2 years; we're talking dozens of gastrointestinal sojourns - there is a Christian-themed pamphlet, news story, or Kent Hovind DVD. Is this horrific, muck-floored, stench-filled bathroom a secret meeting place of underground Christian propagandists? Or does it happen to be the place closest to an outspoken proponent of Jesus? From a state of utter, threadbare confusion, I ask you: what's the correlation?
need a bit of writing help. ( yeah I know me and the rest of the world) ? I'm just wondering if anyone can read this little bit over and give me an idea on what needs improvement style wise. I can tell a good story but writing one can be tricky Here's what you need to know about this segment. Darcy is a mortal girl who is the daughter of Daniel a vampire. She's in her 20's and only recently reunited with her father and vampire side of her family. two rogue vampires are trying to harm her in some way ( Fang and Trisha) so far in the plot we don't know what they're up to yet. Because of the danger posed by these two Darcy has just moved in to her Uncle Dominic's home to live with her vampire family. This segment opens up with Darcy sleeping in her Father's room. Sleep came quickly, but her dreams were troubling. Over and over again she saw the faces of Fang and Trisha. They could be anywhere in St. John’s waiting for her the moment the sun set. It was dusky by four this time of year what if they found her on her way back from the university. They had already attempted an attack on campus, who was to say they wouldn’t try again. For all Darcy knew they could be waiting in the tunnels that connected each building underground. Her locker was down in those corridors it wouldn’t be hard to find her there. What if they found her mother and father or Sue and tried to harm them? Over and over she could see the grotesque images of her parents and friend dead on the ground their throats ripped open by the murderous pair. Suddenly the old nightmare returned. Like before she was on a bed with only a silk nightshirt to protect her from the cold. Charlotte was there holding her on her side insisting that Darcy not turn around and put all focus on her. Darcy turned her head and saw a faceless vampire with fangs longer then she had ever seen. All at once she was afraid despite Charlotte’s attempts to calm her and hold her still. Something sharp pinched her skin, a needle perhaps. All at once she was in darkness and in the distance she could hear a voice repeat over and over again. “She never woke up.” There was a sound in the room, Darcy didn’t know if she was dreaming or awake. There was no light to see but she could hear someone moving about. Still locked in the world between dreaming and awake Darcy sat upright in bed she let out a high pitch scream. Within seconds the light was on and there was Daniel clutching his ears. “For the love of all things bright and beautiful will you knock that off." “What are you doing here? Don’t you vampires know how to knock? You scared the crap out of me.” Darcy didn’t know if she should be angry or relieved at the sight of Daniel. Breathing deeply she tried to slow her racing heart. “Well, this is my room, and you looked kind of cute sleeping there so I didn’t want to wake you up. It turns out that while I was being evicted Dominic failed to move my DVDs. So I came in to get them.” He held up a carrying binder for disks. “Sorry about the whole mess up in sleeping arrangements.” Darcy shrugged apologetically. “It’s not your fault Darcy, besides it’s not the end of the world. Although I may have to resort to smothering Freddy in his sleep, he snores a lot. “ “Vampires can snore?” Darcy asked getting out of her father’s bed and finding her slippers. “Oh yes, snore, sleep talk, lucid dream the whole bit. Where do you think you get it from? “Watching his daughter getting up out of bed he smiled. “ If you’re getting up I ordered some pizza for you. When everyone was going out Dominic mentioned you were asleep so I just put it in the fridge that was only about five minutes ago so it shouldn’t be too cold. “ “Where did everyone go?” The thought of everyone leaving while she slept wasn’t a comforting thought. Hearing a little panic in Darcy’s voice Daniel smiled fangs peeking playfully from under his lips. “Dominic did mention something about feeding on the blood of the innocent. “ Darcy cracked up laughing at the statement. “Dominic’s not cool enough to say something like that. “ “You’re right I made that bit up. However they are out doing the whole I Vant to bite your neck gig. Speaking of which how was your sleep. You didn’t get messed up by three chicks did you?” Putting on her house coat Darcy giggled “See this is why I need you around, I tried to make Dracula jokes with Dominic but he just doesn’t get it. “ “Well your uncle does lead a sheltered life. “ Leaving the room with Darcy close behind he flipped though the binder of DVDs. “What do you say to pizza and cheesy horror movies for the rest of the evening?” “Sounds awesome.” oh no too much like twilight Excuse me as I go hang myself. An fang was picked because it was over the top cheese. The pair are supposed to have been raised believing everything they see in corny vampire movies. So while Darcy is worried about them the rest of her family is trying to figure out who they are working for because two idiots like them shouldn't be able to organize their way out of a paper bag let alone attempt to harm any one.
Who is responsible for fixing an exposed underground cable from a cable TV pedestal in my yard? I did not dig at all, we were just repairing some fence slats that were built around a tree and over the years the tree grew, knocked the fence out of whack and when we cleared away the old fence and some vines that were growing up and down and all around we saw the exposed black cable that runs from my cable pedestal in the back yard. It needs to be redropped, or buried, and until then I cannot replace the fence...I can't mess with it. My question is, this cable is probably used by many homes and many different cable companies...what's the quickest way to get someone out to fix it? I have not harmed it. I have a feeling my cable company will respond as quick as molasses.
Fixing a moisture problem in basement? Okay. I live in a brick ranch home built in the 60's. Never had a moisture problem. My basement has a wall that all of a sudden developed moisture for a day or two. After running a dehumidifier for a week, everything is dry, but there is a stain on the concrete wall. This section of the basement happens to be the only section that is underground (front of house). What do I need to do or check? I don't have that great of a budget and the bummer is I was thinking of selling my home and re-locating. Help!
Sodding A Yard (St. Augustine)? I just completed an underground electrical project and have roughly 200sqFT of sand to cover. I've placed sod before but it always seems to eventually either shrink, or turn brown and get replaced by weeds. I live in Florida and my home is built on an old orange grove so I have clay about 3-6 inches+ down and the surface is sandy. What do I need to do to ensure proper growth of my sod? Should I lay down some potting soil, break the ground up a lot, use fertilizer? I have a pallet coming tomorrow and would hate to lose half of it as the result of my brown thumb...lol Thanks!
What would be some sane, reasonable precautions to take in case the infrastructure collapses? Wow, I know this question may bring out some nutty responses. The scenario I am envisioning, however unlikely, is: nuclear holocaust, invasion, uncontrollable plague, or maybe we just run out of petroleum products before alternative energy is actually an alternative. Or there is a huge earth quake or something. I don't want to go crazy with this, build an underground bunker, put razor wire around the house, etc. I want to see if I can get some clear headed answers about this sort of thing. I don't know, like how much water to store, what kind of food to store, are firearms for home protection something to be considered? Should we buy a few hundred gold coins to put under the bed? I'm thinking from the view point of a man with a wife and an 8 year old child. Maybe I am in Northern California. Thank you all for taking the time to read this.
Trying to design my deck, I need help please!? We want to build a deck that is attached the front of our ranch home. It absolutely can not be higher than 14". Otherwise it is higher than our front steps. The deck size we want is 30'x9' and would span most of the length of our home. We were told by some friends that for support reasons that we have to use 2x12 as part of the framing. My boyfriend said that was too big, and we wouldn't be able to do the deck with that board size. Can we build the frame some other way and not have our frame underground? I can e mail a copy of the materials list quote if that would help in any way...

Need some advice about my Jungle!? The residential area I live in was once woodland. Now they have built all these homes and garden we still have the problem with woodland plants and weeds...........You would not believe what I am fighting to get rid of in my lawn which is made up of thistles, underground elder, stinging nettles, doc leaves, you name it. Another problem is bramble runners they are appearing from everywhere and grow about 12" every couple of days....it is a nightmare. Along with this we have an invasion of red ants and woodland spiders. The whole area is under a blanket of spiders webs 365 days of the year and we have problems with rats too! I have been treating my lawns with "Weed and Feed" but it is not making difference with the weed problem. It is very difficult to grow anything in my garden other than weeds.................any advice would be most welcome. Thank you.
How expensive would it be to put a two story basement under a new construction home? My wife & I are going to build a new home in the next 9 years or so and I am very interested in having a sub-basement (a full basement under the normal one). My dream is to have a cape cod-like home with a basement that I can park two cars in (two car garage door right on the side of the house). The basement would have a 10' ceiling. The 2 car garage would take up about 2/3 or so of the basement and the remaining part could be a utility room containing the furnace, washer/dryer, etc... This is where it gets interesting. Under the basement/garage, I want to have another full basement with 10' ceilings & NO WALLS AT ALL (completely open). This HUGE room could be used for large gatherings or parties of any kind. I think having 2 stories underground will help with the heating bills too. Anyhoo, my question is how expensive would this double basement idea be to build? I know I'd have to use lots of huge I-beams to hold up the 1st basement with 2 cars in it... Thanx for any input!
Will Tom Cruise and Jim Jones name be spoke in the same conversation someday? I know the story is alleged, but with his past behavior it is not too far fetched to be true Bunkers? Surely not Tom Wed 26 Sep 4:20 PM Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are reported to be allegedly building a £5 million bunker under their Colorado home to protect them from alien attacks. A source close to the Scientologist couple said they are planning the construction of a "self-contained underground system where up to 10 people can survive for years". Perhaps there are more brothers and sisters planned on the way for Suri then? The bunker will allegedly have a high-tech air-purification system and will contain all the necessary survival equipment. Scientologists are said to believe that an evil galactic overlord is planning an attack on earth. If you're desperate to get more detail on this unusual belief you could always grab a copy John Travolta's film Battlefield Earth, but we wouldn't recommend it! http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/26092007/5/bunkers-surely-tom-0.html I met Katie Holmes when she was stilll filming Dawsons Creek. She seemed very normal. Since her marriage, she has done a 180. when you see her in pictures she looks like she is being dressed instead of dressing herself. She is usually covered from neck to toe. Real cultish just with a more expensive price tag on the clothes than most cults.
